One of the most common questions we see is whether Stripe payment links can include a tip prompt. The honest answer is no, they can't, and it's worth explaining why, because the workaround people find usually isn't what they think it is.
Can you add tipping to a Stripe payment link?
No. Stripe Payment Links do not support tip prompts. The closest built-in option is "customers choose what to pay", but that replaces the price entirely rather than adding a gratuity on top of it. A customer facing a "choose what to pay" page can pay less than your price, which is pay-what-you-want pricing, not tipping. If you've seen apps advertise tip-enabled payment pages, they are building their own checkout on top of Stripe rather than using Stripe's payment links.
How tipping works in the Payment app
For in-person charges, the Payment app has a full tip screen. At checkout, your customer sees preset tip percentages or can enter a custom amount, and the tip is added on top of your price, the way tipping is supposed to work. The total processes as a single transaction into your Stripe account.
A few details worth knowing:
- Receipts show the subtotal, tip and total separately, which keeps things transparent for the customer and clean for your accounting
- Your standard processing fees apply to the full amount, including the tip
- Tip settings apply globally in the app; you can adjust the presets in Settings anytime
Can a customer tip after the charge?
Tips must be added during checkout, before the charge is processed. There is no way to append a tip to a completed Stripe charge, so a forgotten tip means running a separate small transaction. In practice, the tip screen at checkout catches nearly all of them.
The setup that works
If tips matter to your business, take payments in person: Tap to Pay or a card reader, with the app's tip screen turned on. Customer-facing readers like the WisePOS E and S700 even let the customer pick their tip on the reader itself, which consistently beats asking out loud. Save the payment links for remote payments where tipping isn't expected anyway.
